Videotape

I have been on the quest recently for the scariest movie I can find. When I was little nothing phased me, but as I got older I found myself being more affected by horror movies. The recent ones released in the movie theaters have been scary at the time, but once the lights turn on, I have been unaffected. Last night B and I watched The Descent. While this is a movie I knew would not be in the same realm as a classic horror movie, I did expect to be scared if only because I freak out when seeing people in claustrophobic situations.

I warned B that I would not be able to watch the movie unless my feet were not on the floor. I also told him that seeing people in extremely tight spaces would make me anxious. The intro to the movie is long. So long, in fact, that I started to wonder if they would ever make it to the caves. At the same time, though, I was suspicious that the lack of suspense was a reverse psychology type of thing or something and that all of a sudden something scary would happen and I would be so startled I would bite my tongue or something. Luckily, that did not happen, but there was one moment that caused me to get my feet up off of the floor...and I spent the rest of the movie like that.

The Descent is not one of my favorite movies, but I think my expectations for being scared were too high. Does anyone have any recommendations of super scary films?? Rosemary's Baby is a Top 10 movie of all time for me, but also, Scream had me almost in the fetal position while watching it in the theatre. So, combining those two movies would be ideal. I need suspense, and creepiness, but also just the right amount of startling action.

XO,
SVR

I love scary movies. LOVE LOVE LOVE them. I literally have seen every horror movie imaginable and that is including the underground cult ones, the spooky haunted thrillers and the slasher flicks.

For me though...the scariest movies are the most disturbing.

So for that...you still will have a hard time finding something scarier than the ORIGINAL Texas Chainsaw Massacre. There is little gore (I HATE GORY MOVIES FOR GORE SACK) and so many terrifying scenes...its impossible to recap them all.

Also, The Stendhal Syndrome by Dario Argentino. Its more disturbing than traditionally scary slasher though...but SO scary to me and quite good.

Hmm...another Dario classic--Suspiria...great movie and terrifying.

Also, a great scary ghost story that is actually classy too is:

The Innocents (its old but so good)

And in terms of fear in all ways:
Audition (its foreign and amazing)

I have a ton more I could offer but it depends the type of movie you are looking for.

OHH and in terms of recent scary movies--my favorite of the past few years is DEFINATELY 28 days later. GREAT GREAT and I found it terrifying.

**Stendal Syndrome & Audition come with a warning--high high amount of disturbing content but worth it**

PS and Hard Candy. Really intense. Really good.

I'm old school - the movies that scare me most are the ones that seem real - the recent torture porn movies like Saw don't do it for me.

Two movies that left me with lights on - Jaws and Silence of the Lambs. More traditional horror - Pitch Black is pretty good.

Spencer--I'm with you...torture porn and just gore...ew. Gross just to be gross.

Kassyk- Oh wow! Thanks for the suggestions. I am super excited now. I have had Audition in my queue for awhile now. I need to move it up, but have to make sure I have someone with me when I watch it. I agree about the scariest movies being the more disturbing ones. I have seen Texas Chainsaw Massacre and 28 Days Later and I agree that they're both awesome. I will definitely check your suggestions out. Yay!

Spencer- Silence of the Lambs when she's in the dark is so freaky. Also, "Precious?!" aaahhh!

I do not like scary movies.

I'm too jumpy. Movies like Seven and those kind of thrillers are the ones that scare the bejeesus out of me.

And my verification word was KAUAI. Rub it in, Blogger, that I'm NOT in Hawaii.

The Exorcist, Hellbound Hellraiser, Poltergeist... all scary! Never saw the movie "Saw", but I hear it's pretty good.

Don't forget Creepshow!

I'm not a fan of horror, but like a good scare every now and then. I saw The Ring in theaters and liked it a lot. I've heard the original Japanese is better, but the American was scary enough for me.

Yeah, I really like suspense so you never know when something will happen. I am notorious for screaming at nothing;)
