Playing Mozart's Requiem on the eve of the anniversary of his death at the same exact time it is being played in Salzburg. If that's not overwhelming then I don't know what is.
Tonight my orchestra played with the Piedmont Singers at an Episcopal Church in Middleburg, VA. To play a piece of music that I have loved for so many years was exciting in itself, but to play it on such a momentous day with so many other amazing factors was just incredible. I feel so lucky to be involved with this concert.
I have this incredibly dorky habit of getting very into the music I am playing. I may not be the most technical player out there anymore, but the love I have for what I play is what I believe sets me apart from the pedestrian players. I listen while I play. I enjoy how my part fits in with the whole and sometimes, when I realize that I am a part of an amazing piece of music, I am just filled with joy.
The movie Amadeus was where I first heard and fell in love with Mozart's Requiem.
If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

Autumn
Last Tuesday I headed out early on my way to visit my sister in Saratoga Springs, NY.
>
It's a gorgeous trip up there anyway, but when the leaves are changing, it is just exquisite!
>
I about died while driving through the Pennsylvania mountains. I'm pretty sure they were peaking last week. WOW!
The next morning Ali and I left at about 8am on our way to to Vermont. Our directions were to Burlington and this ride was just as gorgeous as my one the day before.
>
At one point in the directions Ali said, "OK...turn right" but as I looked to my right, all I saw was a huge lake!
>
"WHAT?!" The directions, which we hadn't really looked too closely at, said, "Turn right. Get on ferry." I thought I was going to throw up. The lake is HUGE and I had never driven onto a ferry so I was just a little scared. But we did it and it was fun!
>
>
I was scared because we were the last car on to the ferry and were quite close to the edge!
>
Burlington is awesome. I was there about 15 years ago, but my memories are hazy. I could absolutely live here.
>
>
People here were also super nice. Two people stopped to offer us change when we were feeding the parking meter.
We also went to the Magic Hat Brewery in Burlington, VT, which was AWESOME and we got to try about eight beers. I was in heaven.
>
Then we drove the 35 minutes or so to Montpelier to visit our Aunt Bonnie. I remembered Montpelier much better as I was there for a about a week when I was 15. We had a grand afternoon hanging out with my aunt drinking beer/wine and playing with her huge dogs.
>
>
It was chilly there so we actually sat in the sun for most of the day. How refreshing to sit in the sun and not be miserable. Cold weather, FTW!!!
>
On Thursday, Nathaniel's (my brother-in-law), family came into town to visit as well so much of the next few days was us all drinking beer and going out to eat.

Nathaniel in Saratoga Springs, NY.
I left earrrly Monday morning and while my drive home went well, I was sad to leave. I miss living near my sister. And it's also nice to not work for a week. But mostly, I miss living near Ali. A lot.

Line Up
First lines of 2007....
January:
"That was boring! Do it again! TEN, NINE, EIGHT, SEVEN, SIX, FIVE, FOUR, THREE, TWO, ONE...HAPPY NEW YEAR (again)!""
February:
"Not only will I be flipping the pages on my Dogs and Scotland calendars today, I will also begin the final countdown to the greatest day of the year. 17 February The birthday of yours truly."
March:
"Apparently, all chivalrous men were absent from the metro yesterday morning between 7am and 7:50am."
April:
"This is my favorite shot from my first roll on my new fisheye camera."
May:
"It was about a month ago that Brendan and I were lamenting the fact that no one had a birthday come up since that is usually our reason for having a party."
June:
" I'm on a wire to see your star shine. By 1 am last night I thought to myself, "Do they have anything else to play?" Black Rebel Motorcycle Club played a kick-ass* show last night at the 930 Club."
July:
"In preparation for the upcoming 48 Hour Film Festival that myself and some friends are participating in, Serena, Terra, Lisa, and I headed down to Richmond yesterday evening to do some research on locations."
August:
"I hate to use the word fair."
September:
"It's amazing how things can shape up in a matter of days."
October:
"Dear Mother Nature, It is now not only officially Autumn, but it is now October and highs of 86 degrees are not going to work for me."
November:
"Sometimes my mind works like a comedy show."
December:
"I had a mini-realization a moment ago that maybe my inability to blog is because it is reminding me too much of paper writing and writing papers is the last thing I want to be doing right now."
Going back through some old blogs from this year really reminded me of how well this year shaped up. 2007 is ending on some very high notes and I have even higher hopes for '08.
Merry Christmas, to all!!!

When You Were Young
I want to meet the Kindergarten me. I'm in this class right now that is about identification of the gifted and talented and I recently acquired the forms used to begin the process of identification for the county where I went to school. I asked my mom the other day what I was like as a 6 year old, but, being the mom she is, she merely said I was "adorable" and "inquisitive". Is it possible for a 27 year old to get a hold of her academic file from 20 years ago? If so, I want it. I want to go back in time and see myself as a little kid new to school.
My memory of elementary school isn't very good, actually. I remember my Kindergarten teacher and aide and various aspects of the year, but much of it is sort of blank. I know I never napped that year and would instead try to stake a spot by the quiet toys so I could entertain myself for that 1/2 hour. I remember staying after on certain days (although for what reason, I don't know) and playing with a robotic-like car thing. I remember the time I took my mom's lipstick to school and put it on in the bathroom, thinking I could emerge without anyone noticing. Bright. Red. Lipstick. I remember the time we were in such a hurry for me to make it to school in time that I forgot to put knickers on (slut). I remember sitting at the little cluster of desks and rewriting on every paper I had that my new name was "Ginny." I didn't want to have the unique name and, even though my mom wouldn't let me be the oh so popular "Jenny" she did allow me to alter my middle name of Virginia. I remember my teacher crushing my spirit by telling me that my name was not Ginny, it was Scarlet.
I am so grateful that happened.
It's weird to be 27 and to think to being 6.
