Golden Globes 2016

As a lover of art, entertainment, and fashion, awards season is pretty exciting for me. While I don't watch every TV nominated (who has the time!?), I do try to see as many of the Oscar-nominated movies as I can. With the Golden Globes essentially kicking off the season, I haven't seen everything just yet, but I'm still going to make my predictions. And by my predictions, I mean, what I want to win. I've never been good at cheering for the favorite if its not also my favorite.

Best Picture Drama:
  • Carol
  • Mad Max
  • The Revenant
  • Room
  • Spotlight
I've only seen two of these so far (Mad Max and The Revenant-yay, Tom Hardy!) and I hear that Spotlight is awesome, but I have to cheer for The Revenant on this one. I thought it was beautiful and I loved the whole natural light thing. I get that it's more of a cinematography thing, but it, combined with the great acting, made for a stellar film.

Best Actress in a Drama:
  • Cate Blanchett- Carol
  • Brie Larson- Room
  • Rooney Mara- Carol
  • Saoirse Ronan- Brooklyn
  • Alicia Wikander- The Danish Girl
Yikes, haven't seen any of these. Word on the street (not that I'm on it) is that Brie Larson will win, and I like her, but I would love to see Saoirse Ronan win this. Or Rooney Mara because she is amazing. Oh wait, Alicia Wikander is cool, too. Sorry, Cate, but you won recently so step aside, but not before I can see what beautiful dress you are wearing.

Best Actor in a Drama:
  • Bryan Cranston- Trumbo
  • Leonardo DiCaprio- The Revenant
  • Michael Fassbender- Steve Jobs
  • Eddie Redmayne- The Danish Girl
  • Will Smith- Concussion
If Leonardo DiCaprio doesn't win this, I'll scream.

Best Picture Musical/Comedy:
  • The Big Short
  • Joy
  • The Martian
  • Spy
  • Trainwreck
I think The Big Short is amazing for making something so boring (mortgages, not people losing their money) an exciting story, but The Martian was an experience for me. It's so good.

 Best Actress Musical/Comedy:
  • Jennifer Lawrence- Joy
  • Melissa McCarthy- Spy
  • Amy Schumer- Trainwreck
  • Maggie Smith- The Lady in the Van
  • Lily Tomlin- Grandma
I always want Jennifer Lawrence to win.

Best Actor Musical/Comedy:
  • Christian Bale- The Big Short
  • Steve Carel- The Big Short
  • Matt Damon- The Martian
  • Al Pacino- Danny Collins
  • Mark Ruffalo- Infinitely Polar Bear
All about the astronaut here.

Best Supporting Actress:
  • Jane Fonda- Youth
  • Jennifer Jason Leigh- The Hateful Eight
  • Helen Mirren- Trumbo
  • Alicia Wikander- Ex Machina
  • Kate Winslet- Steve Jobs
I'd love to see Alicia Wikander win this because that role, and the way she played it, was so cool.

Best Supporting Actor:
  • Paul Dano- Love & Mercy
  • Idris Elba- Beasts of No Nation
  • Mark Rylance- Bridge of Spies
  • Michael Shannon- 99 Homes
  • Sylvester Stallone- Creed
I haven't even heard of some of these movies so let's go with Sly Stallone because how cool would that be!?

 Best Director:
  • Todd Haynes- Carol
  • Alejandro Inarritu- The Revenant
  • Tom McCarthy- Spotlight
  • George Miller- Mad Max: Fury Road
  • Ridley Scott- The Martian
Oof, no idea. Wow! I might just go with Inarritu because I'm still on a Revenant high.

 Best TV Drama:
  • Empire
  • Game of Thrones
  • Mr. Robot
  • Marcos
  • Outlander
I love Game of Thrones, but Outlander deserves some love, y'all.

Best Actress- Drama:
  • Caitriona Balfe- Outlander
  • Viola Davis- HTGAWM
  • Eva Green- Penny Dreadful
  • Taraji P. Henson- Empire
  • Robin Wright- House of Cards
DUH, Caitriona Balfe for Outlander! Times one million!!!!!

Best Actor- Drama:
  • Jon Hamm- Mad Men
  • Rami Malek- Mr. Robot
  • Wagner Moura- Narcos
  • Bob Odenkirk- Better Call Saul
  • Liev Schreiber- Ray Donovan
I can't believe Sam Heughan for Outlander wasn't nominated. He is so good! I guess I'll go with Jon Hamm- I love me some Don Draper!

Okay, that's all I'm predicting because I watch very few comedies and then Fargo better win for the miniseries.

GOOD LUCK, LEO, I LOVE YOU!

The Filmography Project: David Fincher

I really need to stop starting new projects.

But alas....

So, I want to watch the entire filmographies of some of my favorite actors and directors. It's something that with some, I've already done, but I want to refocus and really think about the bodies of work. Besides, these are my favorite actors and directors for a reason so it would be a good idea to make sure I've seen everything!

David Fincher is definitely on this list and with "Gone Girl" coming out this year, it's the perfect time to get excited about his films.

Film For The Future

I happened upon an article just now about which books to be sure to read before their movies come out on the Random House Tumblr and it made me grr just a little bit. Not that this is a new thing. The majority of book readers want to read the book before they see the movie and I do see the benefits of that. It's great to read a book and be able to create the world and characters in my own mind before seeing the vision of someone else. And nothing beats flying through a book that is written so well that it makes the reader feel something through just words, as opposed to film which uses sight and sound.

So, while there are many books that I've read before their adaptations have come out, it's not really my favorite thing to do. A film will almost never go as deep as a book can so I feel like I'd rather read the book after I watch the movie. That way I get to expand upon the story instead of reading the book and then potentially feeling let down by the film.

It also happens that I usually read a book years before its movie comes out, which is  the perfect scenario, in my opinion. This way I have experienced the story in its original format and have been able to use my own mind to create the book's world and then I have enough time before the movie for it all to fade a little in my memory. A good example of this was The Hunger Games. I read the first book 3 or 4 years before the film adaptation came out so I knew enough to be properly excited, but I didn't spend the entire time in the theatre thinking, "This is different than the book." and "They left that out from the book."

So why did the Random House article annoy me? Because at this point, these movies are coming out too soon to try to read the book and be able to see the movie and be pleased. It is so rare that I hear of anyone going to a movie based off of a book and not having some sort of comment about it. (I definitely am one of the rare ones who can easily separate the two.) It is my recommendation that movie watchers see these movies and then, if they like them, they can head to their closest Barnes & Noble and pick up the book.

So, which movies will I be seeing?
  • I am currently so obsessed with The Spectacular Now and can NOT wait to see it. I saw the book the other day and made a mental note to pick it up after I see the movie, which I will love. (How do I know I'll love it? Well, I love most things.) I think Shailene Woodley is incredible and I can't wait for more of her films.
  • Carrie- I've seen the original film, but have never read the book. Not sure if I'll see this.
  • I definitely want to see The Wolf of Wall Street because I love Leonardo DiCaprio! The trailer looks so good.
  • The Book Thief has been on my To Read list for quite awhile, but I keep putting other books higher on my priority list. I honestly haven't heard much about this film! Have you??

The Blood Is Love

I don't care if people don't like Twilight. To each their own, right? And it's not like I like everything. I loathe ugly Betty, have never seen Lord of the Rings and really wasn't that excited about Transformers. But since Twilight is extremely popular right now, people love to hate it. And since I work at a bookstore, where every other request is for the books or movies, I hear about it A LOT. The following are the most common complaints about the story I hear:

1. Vampires Don't Sparkle

Ummm, vampires aren't real. It's like saying the Boogie Monster isn't green. Um, he's not real so if a writer wants to make him blue and yellow polka dots, he/she can.

What about Vampire Diaries which allows many of its vamps to be out during the day because of a special ring? It's just another element to the story. Not a big deal.

2. Edward is controlling.

I often hear people say that Bella is a horrible role model. I'm sorry, but last I checked the book was classified as fiction. I never read it for my own self help. And if you've read the books, you'd know that Edward is trying to protect Bella. She's a klutz and always getting hurt and then she has a crazed vampire after her! Of course he wants to be by her side all the time.

3. Robert Pattinson is not that good looking.

Um, you're wrong.

4. The book is not good for feminists.

THANK GOODNESS!

5. Stephenie Meyer is not a good writer.

Yes, she is. She's a good writer, not a great writer. Better than I am, for sure. Have I ever written a novel? Nope. Do I even have an idea for a novel? Nope. She wrote something that has engaged a gazillion people. Now, if those people don't realize there are bigger and better things out there, that's their fault!

5. No sex.

This bothered me at first, too. Most know that Stephenie Meyer is very conservative in her beliefs and I was annoyed she wrote books with abstinence as the lesson. BORING. BUT storywise, it is explained: Edward is afraid he'll kill her if they get it on. Yes, it's also because he wants to be married, but what's wrong with that? Though not common, that is still the belief of many people. But mostly I just focus on the fact that he is afraid she'll get hurt.

6. Kristen Stewart sucks.

I don't think she does. Also, I think she's just really shy and awkward. How would you handle a million questions thrown at you and people falling over themselves to get to you? Um, scary. I say stupid shit all the time, but luckily no one is taping it and reporting it to the world.

Check this out: Shirley Manson likes her!

The Lover In Me

I recently saw two movies that seemed to have been made for me. Bright Star and The Young Victoria.

I love love love period pieces. I love the clothes and the accents and the manners and traditions. Most especially out of that list, though, I love the clothes. Do you know how badly I wanted to be wearing a regal gown today? Very!

I don't want to bring back much from that time period, but can't we have a blast from the past with the clothes?

Art

On Serena's most recent post, I was about to comment with my own films that I find gorgeous and inspiring when I thought, why not write my own post about them? So here ya go:

Amadeus:

I am obsessed with the Mozart Requiem. It is gorgeous. I used to listen to Mozart so much that I had to stop because I knew it so well that I couldn't study or read while it was on because I sang along.

Amelie:

I love Amelie because it is like a series of amazing photographs. I think every frame could be an award-winning photograph. And a movie that makes quirkiness beautiful? I love it!

Center Stage:

Not only does this movie have some amazing moments: when she brings him dessert, "You're a great dancer and an amazing choreographer, but as a boyfriend? you kinda suck", but the dances are so hott. Do you know how many times I have wanted (tried?) to learn the dance to Higher Ground? And how much I wish to have Cooper Nielson ride in on a motorcycle to dance with me? Um, yeah.

The Duchess:

The Empress of Fashion. Totally inspiring...you know, if huge-ass dresses were still in.

Clueless:

Even though the fashion in Clueless is a bit outdated, I must include this on the list for how inspiring it was in the beginning of high school. I never would have owned so much argyle or miniskirts had it not been for this amazing movie. I wanted to be Cher. Who didn't!?

Love Will Tear Us Apart

I just saw The Time Traveler's Wife.

I LOVED IT!

Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana were perfect as Claire and Henry and from two minutes in, I had to force myself to not cry. And what special little treats for me through out: the fall leaves, the cold weather, the Pavement poster, Broken Social Scene covering Joy Division, Brad Pitt as Executive Producer.

Love love love love love love love!

Well Read

Tonight at work I made an announcement for our DVD sale and said,

"Why read the book when you can watch the movie??...."

This man approached me after I had explained the sale and said, "You shouldn't say that with children in the building...they don't want to read as it is." I couldn't tell if he was joking. I think I was hoping he was joking because it was such a ridiculous statement. I said to him, "Um, I disagree." and then I smiled because while he was a total douche bag, I didn't want to deal with getting into a debate with him.

Two things:

1) Why knock movies? In my opinion, saying that movies can't be as worthy as books is like saying music is not as worthy as a book and that is just NOT TRUE.

2) Did this man really think that my one sentence was going to cause every child in the building to throw down their books and stage a protest against reading?

When I was little I used to save my allowance to buy books. I read because I enjoyed it and not because some stranger told me it was cool. This man was a tool and I hope his grandchildren are illiterate*.

*Not really. But I do hope they become filmmakers**.
**I'm having an imagination problem lately. Like, where my imagination is on fire! Nick was playing me music earlier and I created an entire horror movie in my head. <3!

A Movie Script Ending

I saw The Proposal today and really enjoyed it. I don't often want to see a romantic comedy and to pay to see it in the theatre is almost unheard of for me. Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock got me there, though. I love them both and they did a great job in this movie.

What was more exciting, though, was seeing the preview for the upcoming movie adaption of The Time Traveler's Wife. I loved loved loved the book and have been patiently waiting for the movie to come out. Seeing the preview made me remember the book and I got a little misty during those few minutes.

Perhaps Vampires Is A Bit Strong But...

I am sucked in, for lack of a better term, to the mini True Blood marathon on HBO. So while I watched these vampires, let me write about some others.

Like I said the other day, Ali and I saw Twilight on Thanksgiving. I had read all four books about halfway through the hysteria. I finished the 3rd one just as Breaking Dawn came out so I wasn't as invested as the people writing "Bite Me, Edward" on them at the release parties, but I was more into it than the average Joe who had yet to pick any of them up. I'm a fan of a good story. If remembering that the books are for teens and written to also promote abstinence, then they're pretty good. So while I don't consider the books fine literature, I think they're very entertaining and I guess I could say that about the film version as well.

First off...the casting.

+Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen is perfect. He's hott. And brooding. And did I mention hott? I am so glad the film version of Edward did not constantly "wrap his arms around Bella's waist" as he seemed to constantly do in the books. I think I like film Edward way more than book Edward.

+Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan. She's described as being kind of dumpy in the books (yet beautiful...mostly just dumpy clothes) so I was pleasantly surprised that she did not go around wearing khakis and blue silk shirts in the movie. My only negative is her way of acting flustered...it looked a little like Tourette's. Otherwise, she was as I imagined, yet they left out a lot of her clumsiness in the movie.

+Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black. Ali really liked him. I heard some people say he wasn't cute enough, but I wouldn't say that. And apparently he is not as tall as described in the books, but I thought he was well cast. He definitely looked younger than her and is supposed to start getting a lot bigger soon, so that should be interesting.

+Gil Birmingham as Billy Black was dead on how I imagined him. Perfect.

+Peter Facinelli as Carlisle Cullen. He is married to Jennie Garth. He looked so young, but otherwise, he was great. So was Esme. She was as I imagined her.

+Alice was good, except I didn't know she had short, choppy black hair until book 4, I think. Jasper made me laugh every time he came on screen because he looked like the younger brother of Edward Scissorhands.

+Rosalie and Emmett were fine, too. I loved the scene, *THUMP* "Oh, it's just Emmett."

+Charlie was awesome. I had pictured him as older and with grey hair for some reason, but I think that is because my dad has gray hair. I always love the dad in a movie.

So enough about casting. I thought it was a good adaptation. Not much seemed to be left out (unless I forgot A LOT of the book, which is possible). Ali and I have been reenacting the car scene all week: "Your hands are ice cold!" "Put on your seat belt!" I was curious before seeing it if it would come across as believable and I'm not talking about the vampires. Would it come across as real that Bella and Edward love each other or would they just seem like stupid teenagers? The progression from meeting to loving was quick, but believable, in my opinion. It was also a quick progression in the movie from Bella wondering what makes Edward different and hearing the Quileute story and piecing everything together that he is a vampire. "How old are you?" "17" "How long have you been 17?" "Awhile."

Twilight is one of those "go to" movies. When you want to sit down and be entertained for a couple of hours, but don't want to invest in something too deep. It's like when I pick Cruel Intentions over Babel for a movie to put on.

Oh, and my favorite thing about the movie? It ending with a Radiohead song. <3!

Has anyone else seen it? Thoughts?

Nightmare

With Halloween quickly approaching I have had two things on my mind*: Halloween costumes and scary movies. While I have my two Halloween costumes set (one for work, one for night), I have not settled on my ultimate scary movie list. The thing is, when I was younger, I could watch anything and nothing phased me. Now that I'm older, I'm a wuss! Being scared out of mind is not going to stop me, though. I'm on the quest to see the best**.

Now my favorite scary movie, as well as an all-time top 10, is Rosemary's Baby. Have you seen it? You must!!! I saw it for the first time in college at a Film Club meeting and instantly fell in love.

I think there's also something to be said about Scream, which I saw in the theatre with my feet up in my chair. It's the classic fear or not knowing who is behind the mask. I love it.

The Ring. I had a conversation with someone at work today about we think some people just don't see it in the same way. When he saw it he was scared shitless. When I saw it, with my sister, I watched it through a slit in my hands. I was terrified.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original and new). The original is almost funny, but is a must for a horror film list. The amount of blood is insane. The newer one, with Jessica Biel, is actually a good remake, in my opinion. It scared me! They went away from the cult-ness of the original, but replaced that with terror.

28 Days Later had me pretty freaked out and I feel like it's a really well-made movie. I still haven't seen 28 Weeks Later, but I hear it's really good.

In the same grouping, I love love love zombie movies. I love how they get you, but they're so damn slow! Ali and I both agree that the new Dawn Of The Dead is hella good.

A few movies I would like to see again since it's been awhile are: Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street, Friday the 13th, etc. I also want to see some of the newer thrasher/scary movies like Saw and Hostel.

So please please please, what are your scary movie recommendations???

One Moment

Here is the entire movie. We premiered last night at AFI in Silver Spring and it went really well! We definitely were in the top films of the evening. Hey-it's nice to not be the worst:) I even had a set of fans yelling my name when we left the theatre...ok, well, they were two friends from college who I hadn't seen in years, but they were yelling my name!

I should also point out that I am the brunette with the line, "Soooo sorry I'm late!"

Enjoy! And please comment.

A-List Actress

Check out the 'trailer' for our 48 Hour Film Project movie. Unfortunately, yours truly is not in this clip, but that just means you need to come to the premiere on Thursday at AFI in Silver Spring!!!

The Film Did Not Go 'Round

Game I took from Cheryl:

-Pick 10 of your favorite movies.

-Go to IMDB or Wikiquote and find a quote from each.

-Post here for everyone to guess.

-Bold it when someone guesses it correctly, put who guessed it and the movie.

For you:

-Contestants: Please, don’t cheat. :)

-To let everyone play, please keep it to one guess per person, for now at least.

-Post your guesses in the comment section for everyone to see.

-Ready? Go!

1. "Anyone! Anyone! It didn't have to be a no-good slut straight from the gutter. Just as long as she is young, healthy and not a virgin!"

2. " What am I? Grandma with the birthday present. Suck it ya dumb bitch!"

3. "Aw, hells bells. They even shot the dog!"

4. "Did someone call for a doctor?" (Ali!- Oceans 11)

5. "Good sir? I heard you were a poet. But a poet of no words?" (Randi- Shakespeare In Love)

6. "Ali... with an I. Hey, what's your name?" (Ali!!!- The Karate Kid)

7. "I can tell you the license plate numbers of all six cars outside. I can tell you that our waitress is left-handed and the guy sitting up at the counter weighs two hundred fifteen pounds and knows how to handle himself. I know the best place to look for a gun is the cab of the gray truck outside, and at this altitude, I can run flat out for a half mile before my hands start shaking. Now why would I know that? How can I know that and not know who I am?" (Cindy- Bourne Identity!)

8. "Okay Lunchbox, let's try this again. We tie you to the roof and you jump off and sail like a Spitfire passing right over the arch nemesis La Fours. You then swing up to the stage and knock out the pin. And when that's gone the stage is trashed and we go smoke a bowl. You got it? Now get your fat ass up there. And dude, don't forget your helmet. Snoogens." (Dara- Mallrats!

9. "On behalf of the students from Vince Lombardi High who are here tonight, I'd just like to say one thing: Screw you, Principal Togar, we made it to the concert anyway!"

10. "I can't think about that right now. If I do, I'll go crazy. I'll think about that tomorrow." (Cheryl-Gone With The Wind!)

GOOD LUCK!

Demon Barber Of Fleet Street

I saw Sweeney Todd last night. I wasn't sure going into to it because I am very picky when it comes to musicals*, but since so many people had raved about it, I figured it would be good.

Well...it wasn't terrible, I will give it that. But it also wasn't "amazing" as I had been told from a variety of people. The thing about musicals is that they are cheesy. The man sings to his knives-it's odd. And when people get upset, they go outside and walk down the street singing. It's difficult for me to suspend reality and not think, "Why aren't people yelling at him to shut up?!"

I did really like Sacha Baron Cohen's character and also thought Alan Rickman was awesome, but he just needs to talk and he is great. I think Johnny Depp did a good job, but not an Oscar-winning type job. Helena Bonham-Carter did well, too.

Have you see it? Thoughts? Do you agree or disagree with me?

*Yes to Cabaret and Chicago, NO to Hairspray and anything overly cheesy.

Lit Up

I just watched Once. What?! Two movies in one week? What's wrong with me.

I liked it. At first I didn't. It was too...off and their accents were annoying me. But then they sang that one song in the studio and they got me. <3

In other news, I am awaiting the arrival of a new CD I shortlisted at work. I am very excited as the first track has me completely enamored.

Love love love.
