Red Reviews: October

I'm super late with this month's magazine covers, but I've been on vacation and sans wifi for much of it.

15. The best thing about this cover is that Sofia Vergara is wearing something a little different than she usually does. I get soooo bored of the same silhouettes she wears. Her hair does look great, though.

14. Unfortunately, Cosmo is hardly ever going to rank high for me because I tend to like the more artsy/high fashion type covers. I love LC, but I definitely prefer her sweet side. The lilac is very pretty, though. And, as always, her hair and  makeup look amazing.

13. Nothing about this covers makes me think of October and I don't like that. Sure, we're already thinking about Spring fashion in these magazines, but I'd still like an autumn color palate!

12. A literal cover. The best of beauty so a close up of a beautiful woman. Julia Roberts has amazing hair! I cover it often.

11. Is it daring because half of her face is covered? Because she has a pixie cut? Because it's Lena Dunham? I don't really know (or care), but I love the colors on this one. She has great eyes and this shot gives them a chance to really stand out. Also, I'm a sucker for a sweater.

10. Orange for October! Yay!

9. For a shot with no neck, this works quite well. Her arms look great, her expression looks great, and the red really makes it pop!

8. Mary Kate Olsen looks great here! Wait, it's Claire Danes? Really? Oh! W, always doing something different...and different looks good.

7. So, first of all, Serena and I have a new podcast and in our premiere episode we talk all about the fashion in Empire! Check it out here. So, I like this cover because of the orange plus pink, but also because Taraji P. Henson looks awesome and that belt feature on the dress is great.

6. Sorry, but I'm a sucker for sequins.

5. I actually stopped and stared when I saw this cover in the store. The creamy white that dominates the cover is exquisite, especially when played against Michelle Dockery's hair. I appreciate that this cover looks very "Lady Mary" since we're about to have the last season of Downton Abbey. That said, this cover wouldn't jumped ahead a few spots if there had been just a little more of a smirk or smile in her expression.

4. To me, Amy Schumer is saying "What?" in this photo. Like, "Yeah, I'm awesome...what?" She is great and I love that she is getting these awesome covers and knocking them out of the park.

3. Hot damn is this a great cover! Miley Cyrus looks incredible: the white suit with the black accents is both striking and not too attention grabbing and her hair and makeup are both strong and soft at the same time. Combined with the splattered paint behind her, it all combines for an A+ cover.

2. Yes! This is the "high style" they're advertising! Sienna Miller is staring you down from this cover with those piercing, beautiful eyes and her hair! OMG, her hair. I die for it. Plus, the dress (?) she is wearing, plus the jewelry, is so on point.

1. This is quite possibly the greatest cover I have ever seen and, if it isn't, it's tied for first. Lupita Nyong'o looks like an Egyptian princess in this gorgeous golden dress and her entire being just glows. Props to Vogue for putting her against a taupe background and for matching the magazine name to her dress. On a scale of 1 to 10, this is an 11.

Red Reviews: September

September! The best month for fashion magazines. I look forward to these issues every year, not only because they're massive, but because it's one of the things that really kicks off the end of summer, which, let's be honest, usually overstays its welcome.

15. It's fine. I think her hair looks amazing (dammit now I want to cut mine again!) but the dress, besides being sparkly, which I always love, is just not good. It's just too little fabric. Why, when you have sequins, would you go small?

14. Looks like someone was late. 

13. I love Emma Watson. I think she is just so wonderful...but who allowed her hair to look like this? It's not even Hermione bad...it's windswept bad. Which sucks because I think she looks great otherwise and the pink highlights on the cover really work with her and that dress.

12. Does anyone know when the FALL FASHION! issue of InStyle comes out? Anyone? Bueller? My biggest problem with this cover is that Anne Hathaway looks way older than she really is. 

11. Nervous to rank Queen Bey so low, but there is some stiff competition this month. Her smizing is on fleek and I like the color scheme of the cover, but I'm not so sure about the dress. Or, more specifically, the boob/hip parts of the dress. What I do love is the minimal amount of wording on the cover.

10. This is actually the summer issue of Zink, but Karlie Kloss is awesome so I wanted to include. She is everywhere right now and I think she deserves it all. I love how into healthy living she is, but she also is just a really really good model. You can always tell it's her, but not in a distracting way and she never looks flat. 

9. Very pretty and I especially love the top and the eye makeup. Also, apparently I really like pink writing on magazine covers. Who knew!?

8. Again, a limited color scheme really stands out: black, white, red. Which is cool because Katy Perry isn't exactly known for any of those hues. The shapes on the cover are what I really like with that fan in front of her face making it strikingly different, but it also draws our gaze to her eyes, which are sensational.

7. This cover feels very breathy. It's soft with the pink background and light purple writing, her dress is soft, and her hair is the definition of sex hair. Again, I want to cut my hair, grr!

6. This cover screams the '60s to me. Or, rather, it feels like a robot from the future has been sent back and is trying to work the mod look. I wonder if that is what the creative director was going for. 

5. I think Keira Knightley is one of the coolest, most talented, and most beautiful people out there. And whoa, she really took a 180 from how she is usually seen, which is awesome. She is the Arnold Schwarzenegger part sent from the future to stop mod Mileybot. 

4. Remember when Gigi Hadid was just another Real Housekid of Beverly Hills? And now she's on the cover of the September issue of W magazine. And looking amazing rocking some Kelly Kapowski hair. Oh, and look at that- pink. 

3. Incredible. I love this so much! And man, Taylor Swift is having an incredible year(s). There is so much to love about this cover: the black and white theme, the piano, the Taylor Swift at the same angle as the piano (!), her hair, her makeup, how they kind of whitewashed her face a little with the light, ahhhhh! I love it. 

2. Beautiful and striking. The photograph itself is great (that blurred background!) and it's also Kristen Stewart, who we should all know by now I love.

1. Those eyes. That's what won this the top position for the month. But also, this cover combines the great parts of so many other magazines to make the ultimate: a blurred green background, great hair, perfect eyes and eye makeup, a beautiful piece of clothing, and striking colors.

Red Reviews: July 2015

Time for July fashion mags!

Keep in mind that a few magazines doing June/July issues and won't be included.

9. This cover is fine, but it's just fine. The seemingly spread-eagle pose is a little weird, but her hair and makeup look amazing! 

8. This one was tough, because expression-wise, this is stellar...but those things on her dress are so distracting! I really like Cara Delevingne, though. I'm glad she is everywhere right now.

7. LOVE the color scheme here. So striking! I also like her outfit with the bondage-looking part peeking out from behind the all business skirt and shirt. I have little issue with Kim Kardashian, but I find her figure to be very distracting sometimes. (Not in an oogly eyes way, but because her hips/butt are always on display.)

6. This cover reminds me of American Hustle, which is very very awesome because I love that movie. This is such a tiny detail, but the yellow of allure is what keeps me from loving this cover. I wonder why they chose that color. 

5. This is such a model cover. Could anyone else pull off a white one piece on the cover? Probably not. In comparison to the Allure cover, the Elle in bright pink is what really pulls this cover together.

4. She has a little bit of a "OMG how did I get on the cover?!" expression here, but it seems so genuine. And while I'm not a fan of soft pink, this cover works really well. And, compared to the Vogue cover, the weird things on her dress are not distracting. 

3. I thought this was Robin Wright when I saw it in thumbnail form and even though it's not, the fierceness is still there. Spectacular colors, fresh outfit, and classy pose. I really love this. 

2. Not your traditional cover, but maybe that's why I like it. The colors are soooo pretty and I love how the background and dress are one and the same.

1. Maybe we should put Amanda Seyfried on every magazine since she's been in the top spot twice now. The dress, the pose, the expression, the colors...everything is working for me on this one! Ah-mazing!

Red Reviews: June 2015

Time for new magazines!

9. This is a striking cover but once you look at it for too long, you notice that the white starts to blend in with her outfit and her hair looks super weird. The movement is nice, but it starts to be distracting. I love the dress she is in. 

8. A nice cover. It doesn't offend me, but it also doesn't excite me. 

7. I like the very face-forward pose and I even think she looks a tiny bit like Elizabeth Olsen in this stance. The bright red is great for a June cover, isn't it? Pastels are so often used and pastels are gross.

6. Love Anna Kendrick. I mean, who doesn't? I like this dress and the color scheme of the layout, but her expression just doesn't captivate me. I need a little more smirk. 

5. Also love Mindy Kaling! And this dress, and the way it matches the top, is so good. Kind of like Glamour's cover, I need a little more life in her expression.

4. UK Vogue is always knocking it out of the park, in my opinion. I looooove the inclusion of the beach and the full body, but relaxed pose. And orange! Love.

3. Taylor Swift is a goddess. I love her so much and I am SO glad she has grown into such a fashionable, smart, talented person. Major props for this cover and it's boldness of 1) the outfit, 2) covering up of ELLE and 3) the dead space left alone by her pose. (It was difficult to not type "dead space between her legs"-Yikes!)

2. I love Kristen Stewart, you guys. I think she's an awesome actress and her fashion spreads are always great. See how her eyes are really piercing? That's what I want from the other covers. The only negative for me on this cover is the amount of pastel pink. Wow!

1. Everything about this cover speaks to me. The colors are amazing- the icy blue against the soft background. Her hair looks amazing and even has movement in the shot. Her eyes are so beautiful and piercing that I feel like I'm looking at an HD TV. And her pose, which is exceptional and anchors everything together in just the right way to highlight how gorgeous she is. I. Love. This. (Also, definitely pick up this issue because the main spread is beautiful, too.)

Red Reviews: May 2015

Let's dig in to May's fashion magazines, shall we?

12. I love the fashion, the mix of stripes and florals will always get my vote and her hair looks good, too. What I don't really like? The disappearance of her right shoulder.

11. I'm not a big fan of this type of cover. Yes, all three women are beautiful and powerful, but nothing on this cover screams at me to pick it up. That's just me, though. And how tall are SJP's heels for her to be almost as tall as Michelle Obama?

10. Not gonna lie, I love the "BEAUTY" right across her chest. If that's not attention-grabbing, I don't know what is! This is the newsstand version of Harper's Bazaar and I like it overall, but it does seem a little fuzzy. I get the subscriber issue so I can't check to see if it's just the screenshot I got. You'll see the subscriber issue farther down...

9. Similar to the Glamour cover above, this is not a fashion/beauty type of cover. Chelsea Clinton looks amazing (that hair!), but this is a pretty simple dress and pose. I ranked it higher than the other one because I appreciate that CC is on her by herself.

8. Reese Witherspoon is everywhere right now promoting her new movie with Sofia Vergara. (I'm glad RW is alone on the cover!) I LOVE feathers and even though it's a bit of blue overload, I really like this cover. Her hair looks amazing when it's wavy and she has one of the best smiles out there. Excellent!

7. I love Lucky because they're always doing something different! This is the beauty issue and they're not using the typical close-up shot. And I'm glad they're not, because I love the dress.

6. Khaleesi! This is the British Vogue, by the way. I would never wear this dress, but I love how it almost blends into her hair and the use of pink with the print is really nice. I like the sleepiness of her expression, but it still jumps out with her dark eyebrows framing her face. Love it!

5. I actually had this ranked lower until I started to write about it. At first I wasn't into her lack of expression, but now I'm really into it. With the crossed legs and arms it feels very "Oh, you caught me taking a moment away from the party. Here I am just sitting over by the window enjoying the silence." I think Carey Mulligan has perfected that little smirk that she usually has in photos and, while she doesn't have it here, I can just imagine it and somehow that works for me.

4. Blake Lively is so beautiful that even though this cover is fairly standard, it's amazing. Her hair looks amazing, her eyes are piercing, even her hands are perfect. I bow down.

3. This is the subscriber cover of Bazaar and I Love It! Kendall Jenner looks amazing (if not a little like Shailene Woodley here). I love the styling and expecially the BAZAAR over the tulle from the hat. Perfect!

2. "The Art of Beauty" is the perfect caption for this cover. Lupita Nyong'o looks incredible! And she has such joy in her eyes and smile, too. So so pretty.

1. Another perfect caption: "Beauty with Attitude". I think Charlize Theron is incredibly beautiful and she know show to command a room (or photo in this case). I gave this the #1 spot for the month of May because of the use of shadow. It stands out from the others and to even put the name of the magazine in shadow, that's awesome.
